We have come a long way after the Internet and the World Wide Web was invented by British computer scientist, Tim Berners-Lee, in 1980 at CERN laboratory in Switzerland. Panama is no exception. Almost every home down here has a computer connected to the Web and kids are pretty much raised with cell phones and computers connected to the Cloud. We have made our way into the Information Era. No doubt about that.
At 70, I consider myself a computer freak. Without a computer and a router, I feel like an old naked man. What an embarrassment. This is how my home office looks like.
BTW, the slim aluminum device in the picture is my Apple TV remote control to enjoy Netflix’s awesome movies. Streaming is another invention of the Information Age. I could go on for a long time, but I won’t. You get the point.

I’m only a few years behind you and I feel the same way. I grew up in a technical household, my dad took classes in electronics soon after WWII and owned a TV repair business when TV stations only operated 8 hours a day. By the time I had started secondary school (high school to us), my dad was an engineer running a television station. I studied electronics and computers in college and began my career in programming. Even with all that contact with technology, I am still amazed at the endless new wonders of science around me.
Our kids carry smart phones everywhere, have giant screen TVs connected to the web, but still get excited with each new invention or gadget. Our primary school grandkids are not impressed with technology, they just assume this is the way it always has been. Who knows what their kids will see? I keep asking, “what is left to invent”? But there is always something new.

When we were young, there were no cellphones, no color television, no electronic calculators, no portable radios, and of course, no computers. The Internet and the WWW were a fantasy. Now we have all that, and God knows what is happening inside obscure labs around the world. Technology is taking the world by storm, but we have not yet abolished war nor cured cancer. Last night Syria was bombed with Tomahawk missiles and a subway was recently attacked in Russia.
No matter how much technology we have, we have not yet reached a spiritual plateau where we are all happy. I love technology, but I can not deny that it will not solve all our problems. Technology and consumerism will not give us happiness.
The idea of the West is that success is making more money to buy more things that we don’t need nor make us happier We must learn to love people and use things, and not the other way around. We must learn to do more with less.
