Who’s Behind Google’s Ubiquitous Logo?

Google’s logotype has become almost as famous and recognizable as Nike or Coca Cola. It’s also everywhere you set your eyes on.

However, little is known about the person behind the Google logo and how the artist came up with it. The purpose of this post is to introduce its original creator, as well as the process of how the logotype was finally created.

First let’s introduce the artist responsible for the famous logo. Her name is Ruth Kedar. She is an artist and designer born in Brazil. Later she moved to Israel where she received a degree in Architecture from the Technion—Israel Institute of Technology. In an effort to obtain a Masters in Design, she traveled to the U.S. to study at Stanford University. Her destiny was being forged.

She was a Consultant Art Professor at the Stanford Art Department from 1988 to 1999. It was while at Stanford that she was commissioned to design the Google logotype by co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

Kedar met Google co-founders through a mutual friend nine years ago at Stanford University, where she was an assistant professor. Page and Brin, who were having trouble coming up with a logo for their soon-to-launch search engine, asked Kedar to come up with some prototypes. “I had no idea at the time that Google would become as ubiquitous as it is today, or that their success would be of such magnitude,” Kedar says.

“There were a lot of different color iterations”, Kedar says, “We ended up with the primary colors, but instead of having the patterns go in order, we put a secondary color of the L, which brough back the idea that Google doesn’t follow the rules.”
