This is a nice English word very similar to “saludo” in Spanish.  A salute has several meanings.  It could be a formal military gesture of respect, like the one the kids were doing, or to greet somebody in a friendly way.  Example:  “I meet this man every day on my way to work and he always salutes me.”

Another word to add to the list.  This makes me a happy man with a warm smile on my face.  It’s nice and warm outside, and the smell of home-made coffee is in the air.  Breakfast is almost ready.  Good Day.

I’ll bet his parents have kvelled frequently about him, being so cute.  He certainly looks as cute as a button in this picture.  He has a demeanor of a Royal Highness with his McDonald’s paper crown and walking straight as an arrow.

I used the word “kvelled” on purpose for this blog post.  In my quest to learn the English language, I try to add as many words to my personal vocabulary as I possibly can.  At least one or two new words a day.  In order to remember them, I try to use new words in my own sentences.  That way they will belong to me if I use them often enough.  They have been internalized.  At least that’s what I think.

If you have not encountered this word before, let me share with you its meaning.  Kvell is an intransitive verb—it can be used without an object.  It’s definition is to be extraordinarily pleased, especially to be bursting with pride, as over one’s family.  For example: “Critics kvelled over the violinist’s triumphant return to the stage where she made her debut many years ago.”

The word “kvell” is derived from Yiddish “kveln,” meaning “to be delighted,” which, in turn, comes from the Middle High German word “quellen,” meaning “to well, gush, or swell.” Yiddish has been a wellspring of creativity for English, giving us such delightful words as “meister” (“one who is knowledgeable about something”), “maven” (“expert”), and “shtick” (“one’s special activity”), just to name a few.

The date for the appearance of “kvell” in the English language is tricky to pinpoint exactly. The earliest known printed evidence for the word in an English source, is found in a 1952 handbook of Jewish words and expressions, but actual usage evidence before that date remains unseen.

And now you know why a parent would kvell over a regal kiddo like the one in the picture.  I know I would.  Good Day.

Karol, one of the Twisters, has started her formal education.  This year she started her First Grade classes.  This is the first step towards her long journey of knowledge until she obtains a college degree.

In 2010 she attended Pre-kindergarten, which is mostly a controlled educational play.  Even though the children think they are playing; in fact, they are organizing their social activities geared towards a learning process.  Karol is doing well.  She likes school and is very tidy with her workbooks, homework and other school responsibilities.  Her brother Abdiel, is not as diligent and needs to be constantly pressed to get things done.

In Panama, it is a tradition to organize a graduation ceremony to celebrate the occasion of the end of the Pre-kindergarten year.  The little kids wear graduation togas, caps and receive a diploma.  Many parents cry with joy to see their kids graduate.  It’s a very emotional event.

Karol’s mother gave us a small plastic souvenir of this event.  We exhibit it proudly in our living room.  The souvenir has a small caption that reads, “Recuerdo de mi graduación.  Karol Denisse Achurra Díaz, Pre-Kinder, 11 de diciembre de 2010.”  In English, “Reminder of my graduation.  Karol Denisse Achurra Díaz.  Pre-kindergarten, December 11, 2010.”

Yesterday I decided to take a picture of this souvenir using a patch of tropical flowers in the background to enhance the picture.  I’m sure Karol will like to see this picture when she gets older.  It will remind her, that once upon a time she was a little girl in kindergarten.

This is what the camera captured one Sunday morning in our front lawn.  Take a look.

During a recent foray into the Calzada de Amador’s territory, I stumbled upon an antique auto show.  It was an outdoors museum displaying dazzling cars from the thirties, forties, fifties and sixties.  For a car die-hard fan, this would have been a passage to Nirvana.

The picture below depicts a small kid concentrated on a yellow sports car on the background and his dad on the foreground busy taking a picture with his cellphone.  The vehicle could easily have popped out of the movie “Fast and Furious”.  Take a look.

I recently forayed into a large airplane fair organized by the Panama government at the former Howard Air Force Base.  I found a large gathering of people including small children who were interested in watching the abundant number of helicopters, acrobatic planes, parachuting exercises, flying ambulances, speed boats, a large DHL yellow freight carrier and a whole lot more of interesting flying objects.

Amongst the visitors was a gorgeous small girl in a beautiful pink automobile.  She was one of the stars at the airplane fair at the former Howard Air Force Base.  She looked as cute as a button.  Take a look.

Yesterday I penned a blog post about how my wife and The Twisters enjoyed ice cream cones one lazy hot January afternoon.  Their ice cream frenzy was really funny.  It was an experience that we would like to duplicate again and again.  That’s what family values are all about.

After licking their ice cream cones, The Twister wanted to stretch their legs and arms playing near a playground for young kids.  When we got there, the place was saturated with kids seriously involved in what they do best—play.  I sat on a corner of the playground and concentrated on their movements and faces.  Then I started randomly shooting what I thought best captured the innocent play of children.  I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again.  Children are the best examples of angels here on earth sent by God to make our lives joyful.

Take a look at a playground in Panama City, Panama full of youthful activity.  Here we go.

It's amazing how children interact immediately with other children they have never met before. The bond instantaneous. Notice the faces of satisfaction of the children's parents. Photo by ©Omar Upegui R.

Yep, these kids are angels sent by the man upstairs to make us feel good. I wonder what these little girls are saying to each other. Photo by ©Omar Upegui R.

Now, the name of the game is sleeping. Nice play. Need to rest. (Smile) Photo by ©Omar Upegui R.
