Papa Bear’s Cave

Below is a picture of my home office.  This is where Lingua Franca is produced every day, usually during the early hours of the day.  It’s also the place where I spend most of my awake hours.

For a change, it’s pleasant to have the time to enjoy life.  I can now read, write, take pictures, drive through the city, watch movies, or just look at the clouds hovering above the city.  I’m not tied up to the hands of the clock, nor I have to wear a tight tie around my neck.  Nope, business meeting, deadline reports and crunching numbers are now a vague memory.

These are some of the things I have inside my cave:

1. An HP Pavilion t120m desktop computer system.  I’ve used it for over seven years now and it looks as the first day I purchased it from Cable & Wireless.  It runs on Microsoft Windows XP, SP2 Home edition 2002 version.  The processor is an AMD Athlon XP3000t with a clock speed of 2.10 GHz.  RAM is 2GB, not a speedboat but fast enough for my daily chores.  Storage is least, but I don’t need much.  All of my precious data is stored on the Cloud.  The capacity of the hard disk is 40GB.
2. The original HP screen died a few years ago, so I replaced it with an LED full HD LG monitor with a diagonal size of 21 inches.  No problem viewing a movie, crunching numbers or enjoying a digital photograph.  Colors are clear, crisp and bright.
3. My internet connection is provided by Cable Onda via a cable modem with a broadband speed of 4MB.  It’s fast enough to stream my Netflix movies without a hiccup.
4. I have a minimalistic wireless network provided by a Cisco home router identified as a Linksys WRT120 N.  I have two cameras, a cellphone and a wireless tablet connected to the network.  It works well and the speed is satisfactory.  No problems, so far.
5. In order to communicate with a friend in Maine, I also purchased a small Logitec QuckCam connect camera.  Skype is my preferred communication software and the camera provides the opportunity of visually enjoying the party on the other side.  It’s amazing what you can do today with cheap technology.
6. To avoid stifling temperatures during the summer months, I recently acquired a Panasonic Inverter air condition system.  It’s completely silent and keeps me fresh as a spring flower during the sizzling temperatures of the dry season.  If you’ve been down to Panama, you’ll understand what I’m saying.
7. I have an ancient HP Deskjet 880 color printer which is still worth its salt.  Bought it in 1999 when I was working as a Comptroller for PriceCosto.
8. A Panasonic wireless telephone system and a chrome and glass desk are also part of the belongings of the cave.

The home office used to be a room of our three bedroom house.  We use the master bedroom to sleep, a small bedroom for an occasional guest and my minimalistic home office.  This is how it looks like, even as we speak.  Here we go.
