Wow! Linda, that is awesome. The closest I have been to a <em>"tail hook"</em> experience are motion pictures. Without those cables stopping the planes, they would certainly fall to the water.

As for your mother, I reckon she did her part to win the war. Good for her! So you do have some relationships with planes.

Bye,

I have a cousin's son who is a navy pilot. He's pretty high up now, and teaches, but when he was still in training, we got to go to his base and see the planes. Of course he did many carrier landings, and when I got my first look at a real "tail hook", I nearly died. The technology is wondrous, but you need smart, skilled people to handle it.

And I don't think I ever mentioned - my mother was a "Rosie the Riveter" - worked on WWII planes in Illinois.

Since the days of Icarus and Daedalus, we surely have come a long way. The Wright Brothers showed us how to travel through the sky for a brief moment, and now we are getting ready to travel to Mars and beyond...to infinity.

Indeed Jim, we are living in exciting technological times. I wish I were younger to see how the world would look like fifty years from now. Maybe I can see it from a cloud, looking down. :-)

Thanks for the link.

Morning, we were on a flight TO Panama on the 100th anniversary. At 35,000 feet, and 550 mph, we were over the Yucatan when the pilot announced the anniversary. Many of the passengers didn't pay much attention to the astounding advance in technology that was keeping them in the air.

I love photos of big landing gear, it gives people some idea of just how huge airliners are. Here's a photo of a post WWII era bomber for comparison:
