It was an early Sunday morning when I shot this picture. What caught my attention were the bright-colored sunshades of the street stand outside the hospital. Unlike other countries, the newspaper business in Panama is thriving. Panamanians are noted to be hungry for news. They are keen in obtaining their news from newspapers, morning talk shows and television news programs. Most of all, they are passionate about politics.
It is very common to find construction workers traveling to their job sites with a newspaper neatly folded on their back pockets. Crítica Libre, El Siglo, La Prensa, El Panamá América, La Estrella de Panamá, Mi Diario, and Día a Día are the main newspapers of the country.
The Internet doesn’t represent a menace to newspapers in Panama—at least not yet. Good Day.

Yep, it’s true. As you know, you and Abe Lincoln were my inspiration to take pictures. Even though the Canon PowerShot A720 IS is a point-and-shoot compact camera, it takes amazing pictures. They are so good, I deferred the purchase of a DSRL camera for next year.
There are still many features that I haven’t explored yet. Yes Sir, photography is one of the best things that have happened to me. My retirement life is more exciting than what I anticipated while I was working.
I see that you are also enjoying your newly-purchased Apple iPad. Technology is so sweet.

Yo creia que el Hospital de la CSS era mas grande.
De vez en cuando leo la version de los periodicos panamenos en la Internet. Todavia veo que el Siglo sigue siendo amarillista y sensacionalista en lo que publica, muchas veces no respetando las familias de aquellos victimas de accidentes o balaceras, poniendo la ensangrentada foto del cadaver en primera plana. Muy triste!
El edificio detras de los vendedores es el nuevo (al menos para mi) Hospital del Nino?

El Hospital Santo Tomás es el hospital más grande que administra el Ministerio de Salud para todo público. La Caja de Seguro Social es considerada como una institución autónoma que sólo atiende a asegurados; de ahí mi comentario de hospital público. Lamento la confusión.
Los periódicos sensacionalistas o “crónica roja” como se les llama son muy populares porque al público en general le gusta el morbo. Usted puede ver cómo se venden las publicaciones de este tipo en todo el mundo.
Por ejemplo, el reciente arresto de Lindsay Lohan fue fiesta para este tipo de tabloides en los Estados Unidos.
Considero que el Diario La Prensa es lo más serio que tiene el país; sin embargo, a veces publica noticias tendenciosas.
El edificio nuevo detrás de la fotografía forma parte de la expansión del Hospital Santo Tomás que se llevó a cabo durante la Administración de Mireya Moscoso. No forma parte de la estructura propiamente dicha del Hospital del Niño. Esta expansión tuvo un costo total de aproximadamente $60 millones.
