A central processing unit (CPU) is an electronic circuit that can execute computer programs. The form, design and implementation of CPUs have changed dramatically since the earliest examples, but their fundamental operation has remained much the same.
For those of you who are newbies to computers, this is how a CPU looks like:

What would a dual core and quad core look like?

I would speculate it would be a row of several ladies with their own switchboard inserted in individual slots.
