It’s staggering to see how far apart are the worlds of the “have” and “have nots” in our planet. In Panama—the country where I live—children have to peddle small items under traffic lights to bring a few dollars to their homes. Sometimes their homes are located under bridges flanked with feeble cardboard walls. This is the precarious world of the “have nots”.
On the other hand, there is the world of the “have”, where people spend $40,000 in a diamond-incrusted Apple iPod shuffle (shown above), just for the heck of it. In Panama, with that amount of money, you can buy a mountain of rice to feed an average family for a long time.
It was in the news today that a jeweler named Thomas Heyerdahl has created an 18 karat, diamond studded, white and pink gold iPod shuffle, meant to be auctioned at a charity in London.
It’s disgusting to realize that these two contrasting worlds co-exist side by side, both in developed and underdeveloped countries. Hello politicians, are you listening?
